Globigerina bulloideus

Classification: pf_neogene -> Globigerinidae -> Globigerina -> Globigerina bulloideus
Sister taxa: G. bulloides, G. bulloideus, G. falconensis, G. umbilicata, G. sp.,

Citation: Globigerina bulloideus (Crescenti 1966)
Rank: species
Basionym: Globigerinoides bulloideus Crescenti 1966
Taxonomic discussion: Not in list of Aze et al. (2011) but the species is used by both Kennett & Srinivasan (1983) and Bolli & Saunders (1985)

Catalog entries: Globigerinoides bulloideus;

Type images:

Short diagnosis: Like G. bulloides but with supplemetary apertures on the spiral side

NB The short diagnoses are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus. They have initially been copied from the diagnostic characters/distinguishing features sections of the Eocene and Paleocene Atlases, they will be edited as the site is developed.

Test morphology: Test low to medium-high-trochospiral, wider than high; chambers spherical to subspherical, the four chambers of the last whorl increasing rapidly in size; sutures on spiral and umbilical side gently curved and depressed; surface hispid with spine bases and slightly pitted on earlier chambers; umbilicus wide, deep; primary aperture interiomarginal, umbilical, large, semicircular arch bordered by a distinct rim. Last few chambers show a single supplementary aperture opposite the primary one. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution: Cool sub-tropical to temperate [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Phylogenetic relations: In gross morphology, this species closely resembles Globigerina (Gg.) bulloides, from which it evolved by developing supplementary apertures on spiral side. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): within N19 zone (4.37-5.20Ma, top in Zanclean stage). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan (1983)
First occurrence (base): within N17b zone (5.72-6.60Ma, base in Messinian stage). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan (1983)
