Description


Diagnostic characters: Low trochospiral, umbilico-convex sub-conical

Aperture: : Interiomarginal umbilical-extraumbilical low arch with rim [Aze 2011, based on Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]


Wall type: Non-spinose; Cancellate [Aze 2011]

Test morphology: Test low trochospiral, almost flat on spiral side, umbilical side inflated, subconical, equatorial periphery quadrilobate, axial periphery rounded, chambers angular, conical, 4 in the final whorl; sutures on spiral side slightly curved and depressed, on umbilical side gently sinuous to radial; surface may be obscured by secondary thickening on earlier chambers, finely perforate on final chamber ; aperture a low arch, bordered by a rim, interiomarginal, umbilical-extraumbilical. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology


Geographic distribution: Temperate [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Isotope paleobiology: Aze et al. 2011 ecogroup 3 - Open ocean thermocline. Based on light ∂13C and relatively heavy ∂18O. Sources cited by Aze et al. 2011 (appendix S3): Schneider & Kennett (1996)

Phylogenetic relations: Gr. (G.) sphericomiozea is distinguished from its ancestor Gr. (G.) conomiozea by its small, tightly coiled test, by having 4 rather than 4½ chambers in the final whorl, and by rapid loss of the keel during its stratigraphic range.
In the earliest Pliocene, Gr. (G.) sphericomiozea evolved into Gr. (G.) puncticulata by further increases in the inflation of the chambers in the final whorl and rounding of the periphery and by a size increase. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]
